Mission:
Old Guard
Location: SGC Command base
Timeline: November 2010
Seth Cade had been a name that he had not heard in years, and it had been out of the blue that Mike had found himself being called in from his own command to take over the command of Atlantis Recon team one. He had a list of names of those who would shortly be part of his own team as he shouldered his duffle bag and made his way over to the officer quarters of the base to get acquainted with his own bunk.
Once he had dropped off his kit, Mike had changed into the uniform that had been handed to him; the grey uniform contrasting with the DPM camoflague that he had patch-worked in with the newly added MTP jacket that he had been given prior to leaving the SBS.
It was strange, as he secured his leg holster to his dominant side.
All of this was still very new to him, the idea that they were utilising Stargates to travel was something he was going to have to quickly learn and adapt to.
"Sir," A voice called out from behind him as he stopped and turned to face the woman who had called out, just to check he was the recipient of the call-out. "Yes, that'll be you sir. You're looking a little lost."
"Just finding my feet around base is all...."
"Heard that one a million times. You're one of Cade's new hires I reckon. My name is Helen Davenport, one of the scientists around here."
"Michael Baker, at your service, ma'am."
Helen gave him a bemused look, filing away that she reckoned the man was still fresh out of whatever branch of service Cade had pulled him from, not bothering to correct Michael at this time as she tilted her head, gently suggesting that she was one of the better people to follow around the base.
"So, welcome to Stargate Command, Michael. Where exactly were you headed?"
"To the canteen." Mike finally relented, brushing his thumb over his chin as he felt the growth of his hairs already. He was supposed to be headed towards the medical bay to get himself checked out and signed off but that could wait.
Helen hummed, a coy smile on her lips. "Would you care for the company or would you be the sort to be left alone?"
"I wouldn't mind the company actually, Helen. Perhaps you'd tell me more about the Stargate Command whilst we're at it." Michael said.
He allowed himself to be guided along the corridors, watching as scientists went about their own business, rushing from one place to another and guards who patrolled the corridors. Helen gave him a tour as they made their way to the canteen, explaining certain doors and officers who passed by them - the ones that they were to watch out for and the ones that would let certain standards slide or those who would not pass up a free favour.
Eventually, they had reached the canteen, the smell of food wafting through the air as he joined the queue, ambling along as he peered around people to see what the current menu was. They weren't in the queue for very long as they shuffled down, getting his food and following Helen over to a table.
"Julius, George and Katrina, meet Michael. Michael, the rest of my team."
They greeted and did their customary introductions as he sat himself down at the table.
"Michael was just saying that he is the new team leader for Atlantis Recon One. One of Cade's team. So, coffee's on him when he gets back from his first mission away from Earth." Helen chuckled as she tucked into her food.
Mike raised a brow in good humour. He knew what it was to be ribbed in as the new guy on the base, that even as a Major he was bound to be taking something in from the rest of the base - at least until the shininess of being the 'new guy' wore off.
"I've worked with AR-2 before," George spoke up, using his fork as a make-shift pointer. George was a larger-set man, wide spaced eyes and a good set of hair down to the shoulders. "A good bunch, definitely worth trying to get on the team with but I've not had much chance to work with AR-1 before. So it'll certainly be cool to hear what you make of them....once you whip 'em into shape, of course, Major."
"I'd certainly would do my best-" Michael took a bite of his food, shoveling it down as he cleared his plate in almost record time.
"Whoa there, Major. No one's stealin' it off you, sir. You'll find that we're a little more relaxed around here than where I reckon you're used to. No medals for speed-chokin'." Julius piped up. "So, Helen was saying that you want to learn a little more about Stargates, huh?"
"Yeah, tell me about them."
Helen smiled from where she sat, liking what she was seeing about the man who was the new addition. "You better buckle up for this, Michael. Julius is a great story teller but he's known to ramble."
Michael shrugged, "I have nothing but time it seems today."
