Character Background
| Early Life | Born in Exeter, Mike's father was a construction worker and his mother took various retail jobs from time to time to help support the family. As a result, he and his younger siblings were often left to be raised by his oldest sister. Mike wanted more of life, and was enamored by stories about his grandfather who served in the Royal Marines during the Second World War, as well as his uncle who was killed in action in 1956 during the Suez Crisis. As such, Mike joined the Royal Marines right out of school. He started out as a General duties rifleman, but wanted more and after a two years, he put in a request to join the Special Boat Squadron (later Special Boat Service). The challenge and new environment was exactly what Mike wanted and he began to thrive in his new service. He was just in time to be deployed to the Falklands War, participating in the operation to recapture South Georgia. A few years later, he was deployed in the Gulf War, being deployed first behind the lines to conduct sabotage operations and then was part of the operations to liberate Kuwait City. After the Gulf War, Mike did numerous training stints, including cross-training with the Dutch Marine Special Operations Force, passing on his experiences to the new generation of Marines in Britain and the Netherlands. This was the time that he met his wife and began his family. At this point, like many, he was starting to consider retirement under the belief that there was not much else left for him to do, but after 9/11, he was ready to go into battle once more. Mike was deployed among the first group of SBS operators to Afghanistan, working alongside American SOF units and friendly Afghan forces to drive off the Taliban. In 2002, however, Mike was injured when fragments from an IED hit his left hand and leg. He recuperate, but three of his fingers were noticeably cut down in size. Otherwise, he was able to return to duty by the end of the year. Later on, he did two more tours in Afghanistan with Task Force 42, before being wounded again. This time, after recooperation, he was asked to not deploy again and instead went back into training with the SBS, as well as taking the opportunity to train with the United States Marine Corps Special Operations. This was what would get him noticed and recruited into the Stargate Program. |
